Part Two: Nick

9. Jonesing

I like having Jennifer Jones for my lab partner, mainly because she does all the work. It’s not that I’m bad at science, far from it in fact; but Jenny is so enthusiastic, and I just like watching her. She has one of those totally expressive faces, you can see exactly what she’s thinking all the time. It’s like she hasn’t learned yet how to hide her feelings. Most girls are good at faking expressions, pretending to be interested in sport, or pretending to be coy when you know they are up for it, or the one I really hate – fake pouting when they don’t get their own way. Jenny doesn’t do any of those. She is just simply Jenny.

The only class we have together is Science, but I’ve sat next to her twice a week for two years now. I’ve learned that she gets excited when she gets the answers, that she likes explaining it to me, and that she’s totally cute when she concentrates.

She’s isn’t girlfriend material, though. She’d get hurt too easily. Maybe one day, when she’s a bit more grown-up and not such an innocent. Though actually I would hate her to change. I like her being exactly the way she is.

So it came as a surprise in class when I could see she was really struggling to concentrate on the experiment we were doing. Instead she seemed edgy, like she wanted to ask me something but didn’t have the nerve.

I watched her dither for a few minutes just for the fun of it, then prompted her.

“Spit it out, Jones.”

You could have knocked me down with a feather when she wanted to know what I was doing at the weekend. She had never shown any interest in my personal life, though actually I don’t think I’d ever shown much interest in hers either.

I gave her one of my “checking-her-out” looks, because she always blushes when I do, which is cute beyond words; but I chose my next words carefully. I was curious as to why she was interested. Was she interested in me? Was she just making conversation? Was she just bored and lonely this weekend or was the question leading up to something else? I had a think and came up with three different ways to test which way this was going.

“Stop it.” She flicked her pen at me.

“What?” I said innocently, but laughing inside.

“Stop acting like I said something crude!” She was still blushing.

“Jones. You insult me. I’m merely curious about this sudden interest in my plans, and whether you might finally have started appreciating the perfection that sits beside you.” I tried for a teasing tone, but actually I wondered if she did have a bit of a crush on me, in which case I would have to tread carefully. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings but I was currently dating Alice, and Alice was holding my interest rather nicely at present. She was ballsy and adventurous, but she was lacking that soft femininity that Jenny had in spades.
